cruise port locations

Pisa, being an inland city, is not directly accessible by cruise ship. Instead, cruise passengers aiming to visit Pisa will typically dock at one of two major ports on the Tuscan coast.

Livorno

Livorno serves as the main cruise gateway for visits to Pisa. Situated about 25-30 km (15-19 miles) southwest of Pisa, the port offers direct access to the city's iconic landmarks. Travellers can choose from organised shore excursions, private transfers, or simply take a shuttle from the port to Livorno Centrale train station for a quick 15-20 minute train journey to Pisa.

Our NCL cruise excursion from Livorno port gave us a fantastic day exploring Tuscany. After meeting our guide and coach right at the port, we enjoyed a scenic 1 hour 15-minute drive directly to Florence for a comprehensive guided tour. Afterwards, we made a rather late but memorable visit to Pisa.

la spezia

Located in Italy's Liguria region, La Spezia is a popular cruise port situated approximately 75-85 km (47-53 miles) northwest of Pisa. While primarily known as a gateway to the stunning Cinque Terre villages, it's also a common departure point for cruise excursions to both Pisa and Florence.

Planning & Logistics

  • Pre-book Leaning Tower & Cathedral Tickets: This is crucial! Tickets sell out quickly, especially during peak season. Book online in advance to secure your spot and avoid long queues.
  • Arrange Transportation: Pre-book transportation from the port of Livorno or La Spezia to Pisa. Options include train, private transfer, or organised shore excursion. Factor in travel time (approximately 20-30 minutes by train, 1 hour by car).
  • Prioritise Your Must-Sees: While the Leaning Tower is the main attraction, Pisa offers more. Decide what else you want to see based on your interests and time.
  • Check Opening Hours: Verify the opening hours of the Leaning Tower and other attractions, as they can vary.
  • Learn about the "Luminara di San Ranieri": If you are visiting in June, this is a spectacular festival, where the city is lit up with candles.
  • Look for Local Festivals or Events: Check for any festivals or events happening during your visit. Pisa has a vibrant cultural scene, and you might catch a local celebration.

pisa neighbourhoods

  • Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles): This is where you'll find the legendary Leaning Tower, Duomo (Cathedral), Baptistery, and Camposanto Monumentale. While not a residential neighborhood, it's the undeniable heart of Pisa's tourist experience.
  • Santa Maria: Located just north of the Arno River, this district is effectively the immediate area around the Piazza dei Miracoli. It's bustling with tourists, souvenir shops, and restaurants, making it ideal for first-time visitors who want to be steps away from the main attractions.
  • San Francesco: Situated northeast of the Arno, this is a lively and youthful area due to its proximity to university faculties. It offers a more local vibe with trendy bars, cafes, and restaurants, as well as the beautiful Church of San Francesco and the National Museum of San Matteo.
  • Sant'Antonio: South of the Arno River, Sant'Antonio offers a quieter, more residential feel while still being centrally located. It's known for the striking "Tuttomondo" mural by Keith Haring and elegant palaces along the Lungarno (Arno riverbanks), providing a blend of historic charm and modern art.
  • San Martino: Also south of the Arno and to the east of Sant'Antonio, San Martino is another historic district characterized by traditional Pisan architecture, charming streets, and local eateries. It offers a more authentic glimpse into daily Pisan life.
  • Borgo Stretto: A picturesque medieval street (and surrounding area) lined with arcades, historic buildings, boutiques, and cafes. It runs from the Ponte di Mezzo bridge and is a delightful area for a stroll, shopping, and soaking in the atmosphere.

helpful considerations

  • Learn Basic Italian Phrases: While English is spoken in tourist areas, learning a few basic Italian phrases is appreciated.
  • Be Aware of Pickpockets: Pisa, like any popular tourist destination, can attract pickpockets. Keep your belongings secure.
  • Check for Local Markets: If time allows, explore local markets for souvenirs and local products.
  • Have a Contingency Plan: Cruise schedules can change. Have a backup plan in case you experience delays or unexpected issues.
  • Set a Return Time Alert: Make sure that you are back to your transport with plenty of time to spare, so you don't miss the ship.
  • Currency: Euros are the official currency in Pisa.
