Travel Tips: Iceland's Golden Circle

Iceland's Golden Circle: A must-see on any Itinerary. Experience the raw power and breathtaking beauty of Iceland's most famous route. In just a day, you can witness geysers erupt, waterfalls thunder, and tectonic plates collide.

Want to eliminate the stress of planning? I'll design a personalised Golden Circle itinerary, or a complete Icelandic adventure, ensuring you can fully immerse yourself in the magic.

The Golden Circle is a must-do for any visitor to Iceland, offering a concentrated dose of the country's most iconic natural wonders. Here are some top travel tips to make the most of your experience:

Plan for Crowds

  • Go Early: The Golden Circle is incredibly popular, so arrive at each site as early as possible to beat the crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience.
  • Consider Off-Season Travel: If possible, visit during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) for fewer crowds and potentially better weather. We visited in September, a fantastic time for milder weather, fewer crowds, and the chance to see the Northern Lights (which we did!)

Golden Circle Highlights

Iceland's Golden Circle is a renowned sightseeing route that packs a punch, offering a fantastic introduction to the country's diverse natural wonders and historical significance, all easily accessible from Reykjavík. While often done as a day trip, its highlights are truly unforgettable:

The "Big Three" Main Stops

Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir)

  • Historical Significance: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is where Iceland's ancient parliament, the Althing, was established in 930 AD, making it one of the world's oldest democratic assemblies. (Photo two below (middle) is of a small church in the national park, just one of the many amazing sites in Thingvellir).
  • Geological Marvel: It's also a visible rift valley created by the divergence of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. You can literally walk between continents!
  • Natural Beauty: Features stunning landscapes, waterfalls (like Öxarárfoss), and Iceland's largest natural lake, Þingvallavatn. It's also a popular spot for snorkelling or diving in the incredibly clear waters of the Silfra fissure.

geyser geothermal area

  • Erupting Geysers: Home to the famous Strokkur geyser, which erupts reliably every 5-10 minutes, shooting a column of boiling water up to 20-40 meters (65-130 feet) into the air (refer to photo one above (left).
  • Hot Springs & Mud Pots: The area is dotted with bubbling hot springs, steaming fumaroles, and colourful mud pots, showcasing Iceland's powerful geothermal activity. The Great Geysir, which gave all other geysers their name, is also here, though it rarely erupts anymore.

Gullfoss Waterfall ("Golden Falls")

  • Mighty Cascade: One of Iceland's most powerful and iconic waterfalls, where the Hvítá River plunges down two tiers into a dramatic canyon, creating immense spray and often dazzling rainbows on sunny days.
  • Viewing Platforms: Multiple viewing platforms allow visitors to appreciate its raw power and beauty from different angles.

Transportation options

  • Self-Drive: Offers flexibility and allows you to explore at your own pace. However, be prepared for potential road closures due to weather conditions. We opted for this during our visit, and I highly recommend it for the freedom to explore at your own pace and you will have control over your itinerary.
  • Guided Tour: Provides convenience, expert commentary, and transportation, especially beneficial in winter.
  • Consider a Combination: Join a guided tour for specific parts of the route, while renting a car for other portions.

Packing Considerations

  • Layers: Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers to adapt to changing conditions.
  • Waterproof Gear: Rain gear is essential, even in summer.
  • Sturdy Shoes: You'll be doing some walking, so comfortable shoes are a must.

Respect the Environment

  • Stay on designated paths.
  • Don't litter.
  • Minimise your impact on the environment.
  • Give wildlife the space and respect they need and deserve.

Book in Advance

  • Popular tours and accommodations can book up quickly, especially during peak season.
  • Consider reserving rental cars well in advance.
