Cruise Port: Pompeii, Italy

For cruise passengers docking in Naples, a visit to the ancient city of Pompeii is a powerful and unforgettable day trip. This is a unique opportunity to step back in time and witness the haunting remnants of a civilisation frozen in the moment of Vesuvius's eruption in 79 AD.

Journey Through the Pages

history of pompeii

Pompeii, an ancient Roman city near modern-day Naples, flourished as a vibrant resort town from its Oscan origins, becoming a prosperous Roman colony by 80 BC. Home to thousands, it boasted a lively economy, public buildings, and lavish homes, all in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. On 24 August, 79 AD, Vesuvius violently erupted, burying Pompeii under volcanic ash and pumice, preserving it remarkably intact along with its inhabitants. Lost for centuries, the city was accidentally rediscovered in the late 16th century, with systematic excavations beginning in 1748. Today, Pompeii stands as an unparalleled archaeological treasure, offering an extraordinary window into daily Roman life and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

cruise port locations

Naples

This is the most common and closest cruise port to Pompeii. The archaeological site is approximately 25-30 km (15-19 miles) southeast of the port of Naples.

Transport Options: From Naples, you can reach Pompeii via organised cruise excursions, private transfers, taxis, or easily by the local Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale (or a closer station like Porta Nolana or Piazza Garibaldi) directly to the "Pompeii Scavi - Villa dei Misteri" station, which is right at the entrance to the archaeological park.

Salerno

Located further south of Pompeii on the Amalfi Coast, Salerno is also a viable cruise port for visiting the ruins. It's approximately 30-35 km (18-22 miles) southeast of Pompeii.

Transport Options: From Salerno, you can take organised shore excursions or utilise the regional train service (Trenitalia) from Salerno Centrale station directly to Pompeii. The train journey typically takes around 40-50 minutes. Buses are also an option.

Transport Options (from port to pompeii)

The biggest challenge is the travel time to and from the site. Choose the method that best balances cost, speed, and guarantee of return.

Cruise Excursion

  • Pro: The ship will not leave without the group. This is the only way to get a 100% guarantee of getting back on time, regardless of traffic or train delays.
  • Con: The most expensive and often the most rushed.

Note: This will be the safest way of travelling to ensure that you do not miss your 'all aboard' time.

Private Car/Taxi

  • Pro: Fastest door-to-door service (approx. 30-45 min one way). Many local taxi drivers offer a fixed-rate round-trip fare (ask and agree on the price before you get in, sometimes including waiting time at the ruins).
  • Con: High cost (typically €100-€150 round trip). Traffic can still be unpredictable. Always set a firm, safe return time.

Note: This is probably going to be the fastest and most convenient way to travel to Pompeii.

DIY (VIa Train)

  • Pro: Very affordable (a few euros each way). The Circumvesuviana train stop (Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri) is right across from the main entrance.
  • Con: Requires a transfer from the cruise port (Metro or walk to Garibaldi Station). Trains can be crowded, hot, and prone to delays. You are fully responsible for getting back to the ship on time.

Note: This is the cheapest way to travel to Pompeii.

Top Tips for Planning your day in pompeii

tickets & admission

Time is your most valuable asset. Do not waste it waiting in line.

  • Buy Entry Tickets Online: Pre-purchase your "Skip-the-Line" entry ticket for Pompeii to bypass the main queue.
  • Book a Guided Tour: Since you have limited time, a guided tour (either a cruise-sponsored one, a pre-booked independent tour, or a guide hired at the gate) is highly recommended. A good guide will lead you efficiently to the major highlights in a concise 2-3 hour window.

Plan Your Route

Pompeii is vast. You cannot see it all in a short visit. If you go on your own, know exactly what you want to see.

Focus on Key Highlights (Approx. 2-3 Hours)

  • The Forum (the central square).
  • The Stabian Baths.
  • The House of the Faun (or other major open villas like the House of the Vetti, if open).
  • The Garden of the Fugitives (where the plaster casts of victims are located).
  • Walk along the main road, Via dell'Abbondanza.

beat the heat & the crowds

The ruins offer almost no shade and can be brutal, especially during the summer.

  • Go Early: Aim to be one of the first people in the park when it opens (usually 9:00 AM) to avoid the midday sun and the rush of other tour groups.
  • Wear Appropriate Gear: Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are essential (the ancient streets are uneven). Wear a hat, use sunscreen, and bring a reusable water bottle (there are fountains for refills inside).
