Travel Tips: DAY TRIP to Montreux from GENEVA, Switzerland

No day trip from Geneva is complete without experiencing the scenic beauty of Montreux's lakeside promenade and the majestic Chillon Castle. Just a short, picturesque journey along the shores of Lake Geneva, this legendary lakeside trail—culminating in an island fortress with breathtaking alpine vistas—is a testament to Swiss history and elegance.

Drawing from my extensive experience exploring the region, the following tips are tailored to help you maximise your excursion from Geneva to the Swiss Riviera and Chillon Castle. Let me guide you through these highlights for an unforgettable day trip experience.

Must see Areas

The Lakeside Promenade (Quais de Montreux)

The Quais de Montreux Click to open side panel for more information  is the crowning jewel of the town, stretching for several kilometres along the banks of Lake Geneva. Framed by palm trees, grand Belle Époque hotels, and meticulously manicured exotic flower beds, this car-free path provides a postcard-perfect introduction to the town's luxurious resort atmosphere.

  • The Atmosphere: Vibrantly bustling yet deeply relaxing, filled with strollers, artists, and travellers soaking up the Mediterranean-style micro climate.
  • Key Features: Stunning, uninterrupted views across the water to the French Alps, scattered modern sculptures, and plenty of public benches to rest and take in the scenery.

Market Square (Place du Marché)

The Place du Marché Click to open side panel for more information  functions as the lively center of Montreux’s lower town. Opening directly onto the water, this expansive public square is home to a grand 19th-century covered market pavilion and hosts many of the town's largest open-air events and seasonal markets.

  • The Atmosphere: Energetic and central, making it the perfect hub to stop for a coffee, grab lunch, or simply watch the boats dock at the nearby pier.
  • Key Features: The legendary, larger-than-life bronze statue of Freddie Mercury standing proud against the lake backdrop, surrounded by floral tributes left by music fans from across the globe.

The Old Town (Les Planches)

Tucked away on the steep slopes directly above the modern tourist hubs, the historic district of Les Planches Click to open side panel for more information  feels like stepping into a quiet Swiss village. This area predates the town's lakeside resort boom, preserving the traditional architecture and a much slower pace of life.

  • The Atmosphere: Peaceful, authentic, and delightfully uncrowded, offering a sharp, quiet contrast to the busy lakefront below.
  • Key Features: Narrow cobblestone streets, stone fountains, historic timbered structures, and the Saint-Vincent church balcony, which rewards your uphill climb with the best aerial panoramic views of the lake.

the casino district

Situated on the eastern edge of the main town center, this neighborhood revolves around Montreux's entertainment legacy. It is anchored by the historic Casino Barrière, famously rebuilt after the 1971 fire that inspired Deep Purple’s hit song Smoke on the Water.

  • The Atmosphere: Modern and entertainment-focused, drawing in pop culture enthusiasts and music history buffs.
  • Key Features: The Queen Studio Experience Click to open side panel for more information  museum, located inside the actual casino building where Freddie Mercury and the band recorded many of their most famous tracks, featuring preserved control rooms, original instruments, and handwritten lyrics.

Chillon castle

Getting to castle from Montreux

By Public Bus

Taking the local bus is the easiest and most frequent way to travel directly to the fortress gates.

  • The Route: Catch the VMCV Line 201 bus from the main stops in Montreux's town center heading towards Villeneuve.
  • Details: Buses run roughly every 10 minutes. You will hop off at the "Chillon" bus stop, which is located just steps from the castle entrance.
  • Cost: Standard Single Ticket (one-way) between 3-4 CHF per person. Free if you have the Montreux Riviera Card (provided by your local hotel), or fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

By Walking

If you have the time, walking between the two points offers a spectacular, uninterrupted journey along the edge of Lake Geneva.

  • The Route: Simply follow the flat, entirely paved lakeside promenade (Quais de Montreux) south out of the town center.
  • Details: The walk takes approximately 35 to 45 minutes. The path is entirely car-free, highly signposted, and beautifully lined with exotic flowers and public artwork.

By Train

The regional rail link provides a quick point-to-point option that cuts down on your travel time.

  • The Route: Board the regional S-Bahn train from the main station in Montreux to the Veytaux-Chillon station.
  • Details: The train ride itself takes a mere 3 minutes. From the Veytaux-Chillon station platform, it is a very easy and flat 5- to 10-minute walk down to the castle.
  • Cost: Standard Single Ticket (one-way) between 3-4 CHF per person. Fully included for holders of the Swiss Travel Pass, but not included on Montreux Riviera Card.

By Boat

For a classic and romantic Swiss experience, you can arrive at the fortress directly from the water.

  • The Route: Board a historic Belle Époque paddle steamer operated by the CGN cruise line from the Montreux boat pier.
  • Details: The boat sails directly to the "Chillon" castle pier. While this option runs less frequently than the buses or trains and is highly seasonal, it offers unmatched panoramic views of the castle architecture framed against the Alps.
  • Cost: Standard Single Ticket (one-way) between 30-40 CHF per person, depending on class. Fully included for holders of the Swiss Travel Pass, but not included on Montreux Riviera Card.

Travel Tips for Chillon Castle

Timing is everything: beat the crowds

  • Go Early or Late: The castle is a major stop for tour buses. Arrive right when it opens (usually 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM depending on the season) or about two hours before closing to experience the eerie medieval halls and dungeons in peace. I highly recommend arriving right at opening time, a strategy that worked perfectly for us. The castle halls were quiet and uncrowded, meaning we could comfortably see all the highlights in about two hours. By 11:00 AM, the crowds began to pick up significantly.
  • Catch the Sunset: The exterior of the castle faces west over Lake Geneva, making the late afternoon and sunset the absolute best time for photography.

Maximising your tour

  • Download the App or Rent the Audio Guide: The castle has 36 open rooms, including underground Gothic dungeons, grand banqueting halls, and bedrooms. If you choose to skip the audio guide, you will still have a great experience. The grounds feature clear information boards throughout, along with a recommended numbering system that makes it incredibly easy to navigate and ensure you don’t miss a thing.
  • Look Up & Look Out: Don't just look at the exhibits. Peer out of the narrow arrow-slits for stunning views of the lake, and look up to see the remarkably preserved 14th-century wooden ceilings.

Practical Tips

  • Wear Sturdy Shoes: You will be walking on uneven medieval cobblestones, climbing steep wooden stairs, and navigating narrow spiral stone staircases. Leave the heels or slick sandals at home.
  • Pack Light / Baby Carrier Advice: Strollers are completely banned inside the castle rooms due to the stairs and narrow spaces (they must be left in the courtyard). If travelling with infants, bring a baby carrier.
  • Dine Nearby: Right next to the castle is Café Byron, a modern pavilion with large glass windows offering great views of the fortress, perfect for a quick Swiss pastry or lunch after your tour.
  • Picnic Area: Just to the left of the main entrance, you’ll find a lovely garden area where you are welcome to enjoy your own food and drinks. Offering exceptional panoramic views of the water, it makes for a truly fabulous spot to pause for a refreshment or a lakeside lunch break.

Accessibility at Chillon Castle

As Chillon Castle Click to open side panel for more information  is an authentically preserved medieval island fortress, it presents significant physical barriers. It is important to know that the site is not fully accessible to visitors with limited mobility, wheelchair users, or strollers.

Reviewers and visitors frequently note that navigating the interior requires careful consideration due to its centuries-old layout. Here is a detailed breakdown of what to expect regarding accessibility at the castle.

wheelchair & limited mobility access

The architectural integrity of the medieval structure limits modern modifications, which creates several challenges throughout the complex.

  • Accessible Areas: Wheelchair users can access the large inner courtyards, the on-site bazaar shop, and the modern, adjacent Café Byron. An introductory audiovisual presentation is also available in these accessible areas so you can see the parts of the castle that are otherwise out of reach.
  • Major Obstacles: The vast majority of the 36 castle rooms, the iconic underground dungeons, the watchtowers, and the defensive wall walks are completely inaccessible. The interior features uneven cobblestones, very narrow wooden or stone corridors, and numerous steep, spiral staircases without modern elevator alternatives.
  • Restrooms: The historic castle itself does not feature a wheelchair-accessible restroom layout inside the medieval walls.
strollers & families

The tight spaces and many steps mean that standard family gear cannot be taken on the tour route.

  • Stroller Ban: Due to the narrow pathways and steep stairs, strollers are strictly prohibited inside the exhibition rooms.
  • Storage & Alternatives: You will be required to leave your stroller in a designated storage area in the main courtyard. It is highly recommended to bring a baby carrier or wrap to safely navigate the rooms with infants or toddlers.
