History of Hollywood Studios
- Conception (The Third Park): In the mid-1980s, Disney CEO Michael Eisner fast-tracked the creation of a third theme park in Florida. Originally planned as an EPCOT pavilion, the concept was expanded into a standalone park to compete with Universal Studios and to serve as a fully functioning film and television production studio.
- The Hollywood Legacy: Designed to capture the glitz and glamour of 1930s Hollywood, the park officially opened on 1 May 1989 as Disney-MGM Studios. This joint venture with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer gave Disney access to classic film IP and the iconic MGM branding.
- Unique Production Facilities: Unlike the Magic Kingdom's underground tunnels, this park was built as an active production lot. Guests could take a backlot tram tour to see actual film sets, animation facilities, and working soundstages where television shows were actively filmed.
- Opening Day (1 May 1989): The park opened with Hollywood Boulevard as its main thoroughfare, leading towards a detailed replica of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. It debuted with only a handful of attractions, including the Studio Backlot Tour, The Great Movie Ride, and the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular!.
- Early Thrill Expansion: To attract a teenage and adult audience, the park quickly added major thrill rides. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ opened in 1994, dominating the park’s skyline on Sunset Boulevard, followed by the high-speed Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith in 1999.
- The Name Change: Following the end of the licensing agreement with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the park was officially rebranded as Disney’s Hollywood Studios on 7 January 2008, shifting its focus from a working studio to a celebration of immersive cinematic worlds.
- Modern Expansion: The park has undergone its most significant transformation over the last decade, moving away from the backlot concept to immerse guests directly inside the films. This led to the opening of Toy Story Land in 2018 and the highly acclaimed Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019.
Different lands of Hollywood Studios
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is organised into several immersive lands that unfold around a central hub in front of the iconic Chinese Theatre. Each area is a self-contained world, complete with its own unique cinematic atmosphere, period architecture, character greetings, and distinct offerings.
To fully explore all that the park has to offer, it’s essential to venture beyond the main boulevards. The following sections provide an overview of the thrilling rides and attractions, immersive character meets, diverse dining options (both quick-service and table-service restaurants), and essential shopping and souvenir locations available in each of these exciting realms:
Hollywood Boulevard
The moment you pass through the turnstiles, you are swept up into a romanticised version of Tinseltown's Golden Age. Styled after the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles in the 1930s, this bustling palm-lined promenade features neon-lit art deco architecture, vintage classic cars, and upbeat big-band jazz playing overhead.
It serves as the park’s main thoroughfare, drawing your eyes down the street to the grand replica of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, which stands proudly at the far end as the park's central icon.
Attractions & entertainment
- Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway: Housed inside the magnificent Chinese Theatre, this groundbreaking, trackless ride pulls you straight into a whimsical Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts universe. It features state-of-the-art visual effects, a catchy theme tune, and sudden twists and turns that are delightful for the entire family.
- Wonderful World of Animation: As night falls, the Chinese Theatre becomes a giant canvas. This high-tech projection show uses stunning light effects and lasers to take a nostalgic journey through more than 90 years of Disney and Pixar animation history.
- Disney Movie Magic: A cinematic projection tribute that celebrates Disney’s live-action film legacy, illuminating the theatre façade with iconic scenes from classic adventure and fantasy films.
character meet & greets
- Streetmosphere (The Citizens of Hollywood): Keep your eyes peeled for eccentric starlets, fast-talking talent agents, and overzealous film directors wandering the pavement. These improvisational performers interact directly with guests, bringing the theatrical comedy of old Hollywood to life right before you.
- Classic Characters: You can occasionally spot Daisy Duck, Donald Duck, or Chip 'n' Dale waving from the balconies above the shops or making brief appearances near the park entrance.

sunset boulevard
Branching off from Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard is a vibrant, bustling avenue that captures the dramatic highs and spooky mysteries of the entertainment industry. The street is lined with historic theatre façades and neon signs that give way to a ominous, overgrown landscape at its furthest point.
This land is the park's primary destination for major thrill rides and massive, Broadway-calibre stage productions, all dominated by the eerie silhouette of a deserted 1930s hotel looming at the end of the road.
Attractions & entertainment
- The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™: Step inside the dusty lobby of the abandoned Hollywood Tower Hotel. After a spooky briefing in the library, you will board a rickety maintenance lift that propels you into the Twilight Zone. The ride features a randomised sequence of sudden, weightless drops and rises, meaning you never quite know when your stomach is going to drop.
- Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Muppets: A high-speed, indoor steel rollercoaster that blasts you from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. (Note: This ride is due to reopen on 26 May '26).
- Fantasmic!: The park’s absolute crown jewel of nighttime entertainment. Held in a massive, open-air lakeside amphitheatre, this spectacular takes you inside Mickey Mouse's imagination. It features dancing water fountains, laser displays, fireworks, and live-action boat floats as classic Disney heroes battle iconic villains, culminating in a dramatic showdown with a 40-foot, fire-breathing Maleficent dragon.

Centred around an oval-shaped lagoon, Echo Lake is a charming area styled on the eccentric mid-century architecture of 1940s California. It blends wacky roadside Americana with thrilling adventure, creating a relaxed oasis right in the middle of the park.
The lake's most famous landmark is Gertie, a giant blue dinosaur built in the "California Crazy" architectural style, who serves ice cream from her belly and pays tribute to one of the world's very first animated characters.
Attractions & entertainment

Grand Avenue & Commissary Lane
Serving as lively crossroads within the park, these two connecting districts bridge the gap between old Hollywood glamour and the park's modern, immersive worlds.
Grand Avenue is styled as a vibrant, modern-day district of downtown Los Angeles, complete with exposed brickwork, iron fire escapes, and vintage brownstone façades.
Commissary Lane mimics a bustling, working studio boulevard, capturing the behind-the-scenes energy where actors, writers, and directors would grab a bite to eat between takes on the backlot.
Looking to the Future: The south side of Grand Avenue is currently undergoing a massive, multi-year transformation into Monstropolis—the first-ever fully immersive land based on Pixar's Monsters, Inc. while construction progresses, parts of this area are changing rapidly.
Attractions & entertainment
